Beyond Scholarships: Helping Friendships Grow Through Bridges

Sometimes, the most meaningful opportunities begin with something as simple as friendship.

For many students, school provides a place to connect with classmates, participate in activities, and build relationships. But for students receiving special education services, those connections don't always extend beyond the school day.

Recognizing this challenge, educators from three Kewaunee County school districts came together to create something special: the Bridges of Kewaunee County Friendship Development Program.

Now in its second year, Bridges is helping students build genuine friendships, develop confidence, and find a greater sense of belonging within their communities.

Building Connections Across Kewaunee County

Bridges brings together high school students receiving special education services from the Algoma, Kewaunee, and Luxemburg-Casco school districts.

Each year, approximately 12–18 students participate in the program, which combines lessons on friendship and social skills with opportunities to put those skills into practice.

Students meet twice a month to participate in shared experiences, discover common interests, and build relationships with peers they might not otherwise have the chance to meet.

From spending time together at the Algoma Youth Club to exploring local restaurants, attending movies, and trying new activities, Bridges creates opportunities for friendships to develop naturally.

These experiences are about more than having fun. They help students build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and become more comfortable participating in activities throughout their communities.

And perhaps most importantly, they create space for students to form meaningful connections with one another.

Students in Bridges of Kewaunee County recently visited GRIT920 in Green Bay for an adaptive fitness experience, exploring how movement and exercise can be fun, inclusive, and accessible to people of all abilities.

How AAEF's Support Made a Difference

In 2025, the Algoma Area Education Foundation contributed $1,000 to support the Bridges Friendship Development Program.

That funding helped make community outings possible, including trips to the movies, visits to restaurants, and an end-of-year ice cream social at Kewaunee Custard.

Through community outings and shared experiences, Bridges gives students opportunities to connect, discover common interests, and build meaningful friendships beyond the classroom.

While these activities might seem simple, they serve an important purpose.

Sharing a meal, watching a movie, or enjoying ice cream together gives students the chance to connect outside the traditional classroom setting. These are the kinds of everyday experiences that can help friendships grow.

For AAEF, supporting Bridges reflects an important part of our mission: creating educational opportunities that meet students' diverse needs.

Scholarships are one way we invest in Algoma students, but meaningful learning and growth can happen in many different ways.

Friendships That Extend Beyond the Classroom

As Bridges continues into its second year, the program remains focused on helping students build meaningful connections that extend beyond school-sponsored activities.

Through shared experiences and opportunities to spend time together, students are developing friendships they can continue nurturing in their everyday lives.

The educators behind Bridges are also exploring additional ways to bring students and families together, creating more opportunities for these connections to grow.

It's an exciting next step for a program built around a simple but meaningful goal: helping students develop genuine, lasting friendships.

More Than Scholarships

At AAEF, we believe supporting education means recognizing the many different ways students learn, grow, and succeed.

Sometimes that means helping a student pursue college or technical education. Other times, it means supporting experiences that build confidence, strengthen connections, and create a sense of belonging.

We're grateful to the educators from Algoma, Kewaunee, and Luxemburg-Casco who brought Bridges to life and continue finding ways to help students develop lasting friendships.

Because every student deserves the opportunity to feel connected, included, and valued.

And that's an impact worth investing in.
