Long-time Algoma Community Members

Norma Marjorie Schmiling Mueller was born in Algoma, WI on 2/26/1922.  She graduated from Algoma High School in 1938 and completed high school in 3 years. Her brother Mike made a bet with her about graduating in 3 instead of 4 years and she was determined to show that she could do it. The internal strength and persistence to accomplish goals stuck with her.  She enjoyed her job at St. Paul's Lutheran School as a teacher's aide and was thrilled to know that her grandson was following in her footsteps to become a teacher.  She believed in the value of an education, loyalty, hard work and above all being kind to everyone. She believed in the goodness of people.  In her high school yearbook, her teachers wrote this about her, "Stay as Sweet as You Are". All who know her would say this was true for her entire life. She was much loved and will be missed.

Mary "Marge" Curtin was raised in Des Moines and obtained her undergraduate degree at Drake University in Iowa and graduated cum laude from UW Madison with a Master's Degree in Library Science. While in Madison, a sorority housemother set her up on a blind date with Jack Curtin, a young attorney.  Marge and Jack settled in Algoma where Jack established his law practice. Marge commuted to work with the Neville Public Library in Green Bay. After the birth of their 1st child, retiring from the workforce to raise their family.  She remained active in the church and community, eventually returning to work with the Algoma Library where she had many friends. She was a bright and kind-hearted soul with a smile for everyone and the patience of a Saint. She taught generations to love reading and more importantly to believe in themselves.
